Health & Safety on Your Journey

Kenya is a wonderful and generally safe country to visit. By taking sensible precautions and being aware of your health and surroundings, you can ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and memorable adventure with Mombasa Air Safari.

Before You Travel
  • Consult Your Doctor: Visit your doctor or a travel clinic 4-6 weeks before your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and malaria prophylaxis. Ensure all routine vaccinations are up to date.
  • Travel Insurance: Obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, evacuation, trip cancellation, and loss of belongings. Carry a copy of your policy details.
  • Personal Medical Kit: Pack a small kit with essentials like pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, plasters, anti-diarrheal medication, motion sickness tablets, and any personal prescription medications (with a doctor's note if necessary).
Malaria & Insect-Borne Diseases
  • Malaria Prophylaxis: Take anti-malarial medication as prescribed by your doctor before, during, and after your trip.
  • Insect Repellent: Use a strong insect repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and socks in the evenings to minimize skin exposure.
  • Mosquito Nets: Sleep under a mosquito net if provided by your accommodation, ensuring it's properly tucked in.
Food & Water Safety
  • Drink Bottled or Purified Water: Avoid tap water unless you are certain it's purified. Stick to bottled, boiled, or filtered water.
  • Ice Caution: Be cautious with ice in drinks; ensure it's made from purified water.
  • Eat Wisely: Opt for well-cooked food, especially meat and seafood. Peel fruits yourself or eat fruits with thick skins. Be wary of street food unless recommended by a trusted source.
  • Wash Hands: Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer, especially before eating.
Sun Protection
  • High SPF Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 liberally and reapply frequently, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Protective Wear: Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to avoid dehydration, particularly in hot and humid conditions or at high altitudes.
Wildlife & Bush Safety
  • Respect Wildlife: Never approach, feed, or attempt to touch wild animals. Maintain a safe distance at all times.
  • Follow Guide Instructions: Always listen to and obey your safari guide's instructions. They are trained to ensure your safety around wildlife.
  • Stay in Vehicle: Remain inside your safari vehicle during game drives unless your guide indicates it's safe to alight in designated areas.
  • Camp Awareness: Be cautious in unfenced camps, especially at night. Use escorts provided by the camp staff.
Personal Security & Emergency Preparedness
  • Be Aware in Urban Areas: Be mindful of your surroundings in cities and crowded places. Avoid displaying expensive valuables openly.
  • Secure Valuables: Use hotel safes for passports, extra cash, and other valuables.
  • Reputable Transport: Use registered taxis or pre-booked transport. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas.
  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts, including local emergency services (Police: 999/112, Ambulance/Fire: 999/112), your embassy, and travel insurance provider.
  • Mombasa Air Safari: We are committed to your safety during flights. Pay attention to pre-flight safety briefings.
